To begin with, there are a number of factors.. they can include location, price, even being at the right place at the right time. However... in most cases, it boils down to the quality of the work and personal vision. These examples are about so much MORE than just good technique! They offer a strong personal vision. You want to do everything you can to make your work special and offer a product that could only be created by YOU ! That means you need to look within. Of course good technique is a given but what else is it about these images that make them so successful and Ed so marketable? In my opinion.. they present us with strong design, movement, rich color, and the human factor. What I mean by the human factor, is the fact that Ed seems to have the natural ability of putting his model's at ease. That is not an easy thing to do, especially in many fast paced shooting situations. My suggestion, would be to be as personable as possible and do your best to develop a rapport with your subject right from the start.
Remember.. on top of perfecting your craft, practice not only talking to people.. but truly engaging them in your work.
